Civic Engagement
Practical, culturally responsive support connected to EAMAN’s charitable mission.
Civic Engagement
EAMAN’s Civic Engagement program helps community members understand how to participate responsibly in local civic life. Refugees and immigrants often need clear, nonpartisan information about public institutions, community meetings, schools, local services, and ways to communicate with decision-makers. Our goal is to increase understanding and participation without endorsing political parties or candidates.
Activities may include nonpartisan voter education for eligible individuals, information about local government services, community listening sessions, public meeting awareness, leadership development, and guidance on how residents can raise concerns respectfully. EAMAN may also encourage members to volunteer, serve on neighborhood initiatives, attend educational forums, and learn about their rights and responsibilities.
The program is strictly connected to EAMAN’s charitable mission. We do not support or oppose candidates for public office. We do not tell people how to vote. Instead, we focus on accurate, accessible information and encourage each eligible person to make independent decisions. When legal or immigration questions arise, participants should consult qualified professionals.
Civic engagement also means building relationships across communities. EAMAN seeks opportunities to work with schools, nonprofits, faith communities, local agencies, and neighborhood groups on issues that affect families. These partnerships can help community members understand available resources while helping institutions communicate more effectively with Ethiopian and other African residents.
Participants may join educational activities, volunteer in community outreach, or share concerns that should be addressed through future programming. EAMAN aims to create a respectful environment where different viewpoints can be discussed without hostility. Personal information is handled carefully, and participation should never depend on a person’s political beliefs.
Through practical civic education and responsible participation, EAMAN helps community members become more informed, connected, and confident in contributing to the public life of Nashville.
